Conference theme: Sustainability of charities and their work


The Charity Law Association of Australia and New Zealand (CLAANZ), in collaboration with Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ) and with support from The Department of Internal Affairs - Chartres Services Ngā Ratonga Kaupapa Atawhai

We are seeking expressions of interest in delivering content for the 2020 conference, Sustainability of charities and their work. If you have suggestions for topics you would like to see addressed at the conference, we would also love to hear from you.

Vision

The vision of the conference is to build community and capacity, through a forum to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and debate issues, in particular relating to legal, financial, regulatory, and other matters affecting charities.

Outcomes

Supporting the charitable sector and its place in society; strengthening links, contacts, and collaboration within the sector community; sharing of lessons learnt and best practice that have worked for others; inspiring action/innovation to achieve continuous improvement; raising awareness, informing and educating on important topics to charities; brainstorming ideas to input into the review of the Charities Act; using cross-stakeholder engagement opportunities to explore issues from multiple angles to increase understanding.

Participants

Legal practitioners, accounting and audit practitioners, charity governing bodies, charity management, social enterprises, law-makers, Judges, policymakers, Ministers and relevant Ministry representatives, other politicians, researchers, students, academics, government agencies such as Charities Services and Inland Revenue, accounting and assurance standard setters (XRB, NZASB, NZAuASB), philanthropists, community foundations, gaming trusts, government funders, other funders, financiers, professional bodies (NZLS, ADLS, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand) etc.

Previous Conferences

The inaugural Professional perspectives on charity law, accounting and regulation conference was held at Te Papa in Wellington on 26 and 27 April 2018. Over 180 attended, with speakers and delegates from 5 jurisdictions (New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Canada). Highlights included presentations from the Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector, Justice Ellis, Dr Oonagh Breen, Professor Adam Parachin, Professor Matthew Harding, Jennifer Batrouney QC, Murray Baird, and many others. The second Future prospects for charity law, accounting and regulation conference was held at Te Papa in Wellington on 11 and 12 April 2019. Over 180 attended, with speakers and delegates from 5 jurisdictions (New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America). Highlights included presentations from the Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector, Justice Joe Williams, Professor Myles McGregor-Lowndes, Professor Dana Brakman-Reiser, Dr Carolyn Cordery, and many others. Expressions of Interest

If you would like to express interest in delivering content for the 2020 conference, "Sustainability of charities and their work", or would like to suggest possible topics that you would like the conference to address, please send an email to wellington.events@charteredaccountantsanz.com by Friday 09 August 2019 setting out the following:
  • Proposed name of the session
  • A summary of the issues and topic you would like to cover
  • How this relates to the theme: "Sustainability of charities and their work", and the vision for the conference, discussed above
  • Suggested format - eg. keynote speech, panel discussion, breakout session, a 5-minute provocative "dangerous idea or big dream" to be presented in plenary (an idea we saw work very well at the recent Philanthropy New Zealand conference), or other - please don’t feel limited to these – we are open to all suggestions
  • Who might present or facilitate your session
  • Approval for Chartered Accountants ANZ to share your contact details with the organising committee
The organising committee will be in touch with the people responsible for successful expressions of interest to work out more detail for review and programming.
